Christy & David’s story

David and I met while members of the same college band.  His fraternity brothers were my friends, and introduced us.

It was love on first date.  We shared so many commonalities that it was easy to be comfortable with each other.  He understood my hours of practicing while preparing for my recital: I understood when his demanding rehearsal schedule meant that I could not see him.

David’s parents accepted me as their daughter quickly, and took us on a trip to Williamsburg before we had been together a year.  While there, his mother tried to convince David to propose, but he wanted no part of that.  Unbeknownst to me, he had something else up his sleeve.  It was a wonderful trip though.

A few months later, David’s family invited me to go to Disney World with them.  With all of our commonalities, this might be the biggest one.  His family and mine both love Disney, and I was extremely excited to get to go with David to one of my favorite places.  I suspected nothing, and was simply prepared for a fabulous trip with my “other” family.

On our third night in the World, we had dinner reservations at the California Grill.  This restaurant sits atop the Contemporary Resort and overlooks the Magic Kingdom.  David had scheduled late reservations so that we would be able to see the fireworks from their fantastic balcony views.

While we were watching the fireworks, David snuck a ring box in front of me.  Right before the finale, he opened it and asked “Will you marry me?”  Knowing that I wanted to be dressed up when he proposed and that I would probably like a private moment better, he had thought of everything.  When we went back in, a champagne toast and fabulous meal waited for us!

Now we are planning our fairy tale wedding, although it is far away from Disney.  In order to include all of our family and friends, we will be holding our wedding at home.  So that we can afford it, many of the elements will be handmade or donated by friends.  One of my co-workers has offered to make our cake.  She has 13 children and learned how to save some money on their weddings!  A family friend has offered to do all of our flower arranging.  The ski slopes, where I have worked for 11 years, will give us a great deal and a gorgeous facility to host our reception.  I plan to make many of our “extras,” like the flower girl basket and the ring bearer’s pillow.  They will be more special to us and also great projects for the summer!

We will have been engaged for just over three years when our wedding finally gets here.  David has to graduate college, and we need the time to save money.  Since I teach at a Catholic school, I also work summer jobs and at the ski slopes to help with the savings.  David works while going to school.  It means we don’t see a lot of each other, but we know that the sacrifices will be worthwhile when we see our family and friends joining us as we celebrate the beginning of the rest of our life together.
